Problems posting on the website
Good evening! Sorry for the lack of updates these last few days but I have been having some problems getting logged in. It seems that all is better now so I will shortly post a few things you have missed the last few days, including a rather shameless plea for sponsorship for Tris and my cross-Channel relay swim! Best wishes Hugh, Operations…
ASK THE ICE TEAM
Over the last six months we have been sent hundreds, if not thousands of questions from our loyal supporters, and often these go unanswered due primarily to lack of time to respond. Today we are offering you the chance to put your questions to the Ice Team. Please post your questions in the comments field below or email them to opsroom@thecoldestjourney.org. Some important notes: No more than 30…
Rising Fast
Since we saw the sun for the first time earlier this week the weather has kept it hidden from view until today. So, this picture taken yesterday was just our second view of the sun. Cloud and a lot of drifting snow meant that we didn’t see it until its was at its highest point in the sky and it was a very brief encounter. Back to the twilight and darkness within a few hours. By Brian…

The Joanna Lumley Interviews: Spencer Smirl
Q1. What was your favourite subject at school? My favourite subject was always math. I was never very creative in my youth and with math, everything was always constant, you just had to fill in the blanks. Math was always the easiest for me to do well in, that is probably another reason why it was my favourite . Q2. What make was your first car? My first car was a blue 1989 Ford Grand Marquis. It…

The Joanna Lumley Interviews
This is Joanna Lumley and I have the great pleasure and honour of being one of the trustees of the Coldest Journey. I only got to meet the team very briefly earlier this year, as they embarked on the first part of their massive adventure and Tower Bridge opened her huge arms to let the SS Agulhas through. I have a photograph of the guys on my desk and I think about them every day: but I suddenly…
Darkness Prevails
The Ice Team might well have seen the sun for the first time in three months yesterday, but it is still dark most of the time. Image: Brian…
21 miles, a million jellyfish and four skimpy pairs of speedos
Last year, in a moment of madness Tris and I agreed to join a couple of others to do a relayed swim across the Channel in aid of Seeing is Believing. Well, the moment has nearly arrived and in two weeks our “window of opportunity” opens up. From August 20th we will be on call and ready for action; as soon as a slot appears Tris, myself, my brother Guy and Rob “The Torpedo” Dunnett w…
The Sun Returns
By Brian Newham The first sight of the sun after a polar winter is very definitely a significant moment. For the last few days we have been experiencing high winds and very poor visibility, and it’s been frustrating to know that the sun has briefly crept above the horizon and yet remained hidden from our view. Today our moment has arrived and we have enjoyed our first glimpse. Of course, it’s…
