Currently at S71 22′ 22.4″, E023 36′ 27.8″ and 734m above sea level having travelled 37km south from the overnight camp in just under 14 hours. The gradual height gain is slowing vehicle speed, as are colder conditions which have changed the snow structure and are creating greater friction.

The first blue ice area is approx 3km ahead. Once we have crossed this we will depot the Belgian Lehmann plus all the empty drums we now have. Steeper inclines lie ahead.

14 hours at that altitude and in those temperatures certainly is a longish day. I guess we at home shouldn’t be impatient about distance covered when bad weather confines the team to camp and gives them some sort of break to re-charge. Digging out the next morning will stop them getting too flabby!

how long do you stay up and when do you take rests? How far do you go in a single day?

Hello George, The Team goes as far as they possibly can in a day – in the last two days they averaged 30 km each day. However, it is becoming more difficult now as they are climbing up towards the plateau, and there are ice fields that will slow them down too. Much depends on the weather as well as the terrain they have to cross. Today they were stationary because of a strong gale – 50 knots. Best wishes, Rosie at Operations HQ

Hi Hugh, I hope you keep warm. Have you seen any animals? I work as volunteer in Florianópolis, Brazil, an last sunday we returned to the sea a little sea lion.

Brian, coul you explain to me, how is the maximum height the team and vehicules can travelling. I see you were arround 734m above sea level yesterday. Does this height get raising every day?

Hello Ellie, The Team can only cover as many km a day as the weather and terrain allows. They are about 3 km from the next area of Blue Ice, so may make slow progress as they negotiate a safe way through the ice field. Today, they have been stationary – the wind being too strong (50 knots / hour) for the Ice Train to travel safely. Best wishes, Rosie at Operations HQ

Hello March – Yes, you are correct regarding the GPS! There’s no problem though, just a wind of 50 kts that made it too risky to move any further on!
