A Trail of Bread Crumbs...

By Spencer Smirl. We began our journey back to the coast after departing from our fuel deposit over a week ago. It is nice to be moving downhill for a change. The Cats are enjoying it as well. The decent of almost… 2kms has them purring along at a break neck pace of up to 8km/hr. I forgot what speed felt like. I can’t imagine the shock I’ll receive when I return home and have to make 60mph on a…

Not going nowhere

Not going nowhere

Whiteout conditions, 35knot winds and heavy drifting snow put paid to the Ice Team’s hopes of reaching Crown Bay today. Not sure who that is in the picture, but given that he has a drill in his hand my money is on Ian…

Leaving the Mountains

Leaving the Mountains

After two days servicing the vehicles, we managed an encouraging 42kms today in excellent conditions and are now camped at S71 45′ 05.1″, E023 33″ 39.4″, 1190m above sea level. Depot on the Plateau

The Ice Team turned around today and started to head back north to the start line, covering 41km in ideal conditions. Here’s a video shot by Ian Prickett of the depot on the plateau, giving a great idea of the layout and terrain.

Back to the Coast

By Brian Newham. The time has come for us to depot our precious fuel and to head back to the coast. It has not been an easy journey to get this far and the large vehicles and heavy loads have given us plenty of challenges as we have crawled our way inland and through the Sør Rondane mountains. In a perfect world we would have liked to get our depot much further south but the terrain, weather and…

Wondered what Sir Ran’s hands looked like? Well wonder no more…

Chairman Speaks of Tremendous Pride for Remaining Five

Tony Medniuk, The Coldest Journey chairman, said he was “tremendously proud” of the Ice Team’s unanimous decision to carry on after Sir Ranulph Fiennes developed second stage frostbite in his left hand. He said he was profoundly disappointed for Ran and the team, but that the contingency planning that had followed on had been excellent.”Don’t be under any illusions of the hardship and t…

Ran Speaks to the Press

Within the last few minutes, Sir Ranulph Fiennes said at a press conference that he was “very frustrated” at being back in the UK six months before the Ice Team was even meant to finish the first winter traverse of Antarctica. “But I am not good at crying over spilt milk – or spilt fingers,” he said. “It is extremely frustrating. I have been working on this full time and unpaid for five years.”…
